Criminal History

  • Mary Girling was brought before the Magistrates on 1 Jul 1846 in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England. The trial was reported as " Mary Girling (34) pleaded guilty of having stolen thirty-six yards of ribbon, two printed shawls, and various other articles, of the value of 15/-, the property of Mr. William Jackson, of Debenham. The Chairman said; it appeared that the prisoner had been implicated in robbing Mr. Jackson, and other persons, to a very serious extent. The quantity of goods stated in the indictment as having been stolen from Mr. Jackson, was very large, but there was reason to suppose that the robberies had been extended much beyond. The sentence was 18 months imprisonment, first, middle and last weeks solitary confinement, with the hope that the prisoner would be induced to lead a better life when she came out of gaol."1

     William Jackson was born between 31 Mar 1815 and 29 Mar 1817 in Kettleburough, Suffolk, England.1 The marriage of William Jackson and Emma Osborne was registered in the Sep 1844 quarter in the Plomesgate registration district.2 On 17 Jan 1846, William Jackson was living at Debenham, Suffolk, England.3 He was the Executor of the estate of Samuel Dove on 13 Mar 1860; Executors were Edward Robert Lock the younger of Debenham Surgeon William Jackson of Debenham General Shopkeeper and Charles Steward of Ipswich Gentleman.
