Stonham Aspal Village Sign

Stonham Aspal Village Sign

The sign, erected in 1981 to commence to commemorate the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer, was designed by Ian Macro and made by Rod Richens. It shows the unusual belfry atop the tower of the Church of St. Mary and St. Lambert. The wooden belfry was built in 1742 for an exceptional number of 10 bells shown on each perpendicular of the sign. The nameplate is below. Originally there were 5 bells, but Theodore Ecclestone who lived nearby and was passionate about campanology, had the 5 bells taken down, 3 1/2 tons of metal added and then recast as 10 bells. The stone tower was not large enough, so the extension was built. The village is obviously noted for campanology, and the inn is called "The Ten Bells". 1
