  • He began military service after 20 Feb 1945 after enlisting LIEUTENANT ALBERT GARIBALDI WALTER KNOWLAND (1923-1928). Royal Artillery.
    Born May 19, 1910. He was the eldest of five brothers at Dulwich all of whom
    served in the Forces, and a boarder in
    Ivyholme. He was in the First XI for three years and also a member of the First XV, and played cricket for the Young Amateurs of Surrey in 1928.

    After leaving he was associated with commercial advertising, but, left that to take up further studies at London University in journalism, and became a free-lance journalist and an author. He joined the Army in 1940 serving
    in the Chemical Warfare branch of the
    Royal Engineers. After training at an
    O.C.T.U. near Swindon he was commissioned in October 1941 in the Royal Artillery, later becoming a gunnery instructor. He passed away on February 20, 1945, after an operation. He married, in 1940, Irma, daughter of P. Nixon-Smith of Worcester Park, Surrey and is survived by his widow.10
